Steps to Write an Appeal Letter
Step 1: Determine Who to Address the Letter To
The appeal letter should be addressed to the individual or panel responsible for reviewing exam appeal requests. The person or persons responsible for reviewing appeals can usually be found in the syllabus or on the school website.
Step 2: Describe the Situation
In the first paragraph of the appeal letter, provide a brief description of the situation, including the course name and number and the exam date. Provide a copy of the exam results with the letter.
Step 3: Explain Why You’re Appealing
In the body of the letter, explain why you’re appealing the exam results. It’s important to be polite, respectful, and understanding in your appeal letter. Explain why you believe the exam results were unfair and provide any evidence to support your position.
Step 4: Request a Re-Assessment
In the last paragraph of the letter, clearly state your request for a re-assessment of the exam results. Provide a valid reason why you believe the exam results should be reconsidered. Include any information that will be helpful in the review process.
Step 5: Close the Letter
Close the letter with a polite and professional closing, such as “Sincerely” or “Respectfully yours.” Provide contact information, such as an email address and phone number, in case the reader has any questions.
